Tim Gianulis, Teacher Tim Gianulis is a
Colorado/Denver native, and was educated in the Denver area. Tim speaks with
pride about his pioneer history through all four of his grandparents who
emigrated to Denver from Greece in early 1900’s.
Mr. Gianulis won the Colorado High School Art Teacher of the year award in 2006, and has received Denver’s Mayors award for excellence in the arts for his work with children in the arts. A lot of his work is created in his classroom, “Doing art in my classroom demonstrates to my student that I am a professional artist.” Teaching art has been the catalyst for his artistic career and he encourages his students to find a way to include art in their college and post high school plans. Tim Gianulis’ paintings are a reflection of his life in the western United States demonstrated with his abstract renditions of the colors, contrasts of this complex environment with the influence of his strong Greek culture. The use of layered textural space helps to represent the industrial development of the west which often contrasts with the unique attitude and environmental beauty of the west. Often you will see landscape features combined with abstract contrasts of colors and shapes in his works. The paintings are only a part of the work he does; he often creates ceramic vessels and sculptures using the same layering techniques. His sculptural roots are often reflected in his paintings. Gianulis’ work has been a progression from very literal landscapes, which he still chooses in his watercolors, to the ambient space shown in his current work. Gianulis will often create pieces that reflect his Greek cultural background, and shows annually at Denver Greek Festival. |
